On weekday mornings, my alarm sounds at 5:30, though often I’m already awake. I get dressed and ready for the day, pray, and read a psalm before eating breakfast: tea, bread, fried egg, and sometimes salad or a tangerine. By 6:40 I’m usually standing by the side of the highway waiting for a passing car to give me a ride to the market. Once at the market, I take a public transportation van to the intersection from where I walk the rest of the way to work. I’m often at my desk before my official starting hour of 7:30.
After a morning of work, when the 12:00 bell sounds, I warm and eat my lunch. My occasional cooking days typically keep my freezer drawer stocked with bean soups in serving-sized portions, tortillas, and biscuits. At 12:30 it’s back to work until the 4:00 bell dismisses the workers. As a volunteer administrator, I’m free to set my own hours, but I prefer to keep the same schedule as our employees. As we leave, a co-worker with a vehicle sometimes gives me a ride to the market, from which I take another car down the highway to our home.
Now that I live with a family, arriving home from work brings on the best part of my day! If I didn’t wake up early enough for extended Bible reading in the morning, I take time for that in the afternoon, sometimes with a child on my lap. The rest of the evening is filled with interaction with the family, as we visit, laugh, cook, and clean together. Even on video calls with friends in the US, I’m usually surrounded by several children on my bed. At dinner, as pictured here, we often use chopsticks — just one of the many innovations that I’ve brought into the home and the family has embraced. After dinner comes family worship, which I find very nourishing to my spirit. Then we say goodnight and head for bed. I don’t mind my bucket shower in the new indoor bathroom, because the water has been heated on the charcoal stove outside. As I slip under my mosquito net and put my head on the pillow, I thank God for the blessing of living in such a happy home.
