For many years in a row now, I’ve been out of the US on July Fourth and therefore haven’t celebrated the holiday. But this year I celebrated it with the African family I live with! They are interested in American culture, and enjoyed hearing about the history and American traditions associated with the holiday.
We grilled hamburgers on charcoal outside, made homemade buns, and found all the condiments in a local supermarket. French fries and ketchup accompanied our burgers, along with cool watermelon slices. We used fruit to design an American flag on our frosted cake, and prepared homemade ice cream to serve with it.
The living room was festively decorated in red, white, and blue, including a large American flag designed with fabric on the floor. I found an American patriotic music channel to play on my phone during our meal. I’d searched for fireworks, but unfortunately they aren’t available here at this time of year. However, we still enjoyed, as our whiteboard proclaimed, a “Happy Fourth of July” in Africa!
