Theft is a major problem here in Africa. Twice last year I encountered thieves on the street, but each time God allowed me to escape without losing anything to them. Also during 2019, several small items of mine were stolen from Afonso’s house, along with some of his own possessions, though thankfully he was gone the night of the break-in and thus was personally unharmed.
A thief has already visited our home on several nights since I moved here. He has taken clothes from the line and charcoal from the outdoor kitchen. Last week, he cut the screen on the girls’ room window and stole some of their clothes. For some reason, in God’s providence, he hid all those clothes on the property of a neighbor, who found them and returned them to us the next day. This incident occurred the night following an attempted break-in at the house of some nearby friends during which their guard was badly beaten.
Please pray that God will continue to protect us and our belongings, and that He will give us wisdom and provision for whatever additional security measures we should take. Please also pray for His protection from illness, as several in our household are suffering from various maladies. In all our comings and goings, we need Him to watch over us, as He has promised to do:
Psalm 121: “I will lift up my eyes to the hills — from whence comes my help? My help comes from the Lord, who made heaven and earth. He will not allow your foot to be moved; He who keeps you will not slumber. Behold, He who keeps Israel shall neither slumber nor sleep. The Lord is your keeper; the Lord is your shade at your right hand. The sun shall not strike you by day, nor the moon by night. The Lord shall preserve you from all evil; He shall preserve your soul. The Lord shall preserve your going out and your coming in from this time forth, and even forevermore.”
